THE AMERICAN BOARD OF ADOLESCENT PSYCHIATRY

Recertification Information

The American Board of Adolescent Psychiatry (ABAP) sponsors board certification in Adolescent & Young Adult Psychiatry. ABAP is a semi-autonomous body presently organized under the auspices of The American Society for Adolescent Psychiatry (ASAP). Membership in ASAP is NOT required, however, for candidates to obtain and maintain Board Certification in Adolescent and Young Adult Psychiatry.

Recertification Requirements (download complete policy)

If you are currently certified through the American Board of Adolescent Psychiatry (ABAP), you must submit a full recertification packet (download checklist before proceeding).  The packet MUST include the following:

​

  • Recertification Application (online only)

  • Documentation of 100 hours of Category 1 CME (if completing initial 10 year certification) or 50 hours of Category I CME (if completing a 5 year recertification period) taken during the active certification period specifically in child/adolescent/young adult psychiatry (unless submitted annually or previously, only submit once).

  • Alternative Recertification Examination: In lieu of CME above, acknowledgement that passing the Recertification Examination will be required to be eligible for recertification.

  • Case Report

  • Copy of current medical license

  • Proof of active board certification in general or child/adolescent psychiatry by either ABPN, AOA, NBPAS, or the Royal College of Medicine in Canada

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)

  • Documentation of membership or meeting eligibility requirements for membership in APA or CPA (if applicable). 

  • Documentation of Payment of your recertification fee (NOTE: You will need proof of payment ready to upload when you complete your online recertification application, so please pay first before starting the application).

  • Recertification Application Fee:  $500.00 (includes CME review or Recertification Examination Scoring, Credentials Review, review and grading of one case management report fee and certificate) 

  • Late Fee $100.00 (for applications submitted after December 31)

  • Grace period of 6 months ending June 30 of the year after certification expires (late fee applies)
