"I retired in April 2019 after 42 years practicing Adult and Adolescent Psychiatry in private outpatient, CMHC, general hospital, and psychiatric hospital settings. For the last 30 years of my career I was at Four Winds Hospital in Katonah, NY as Program Director of a long-term adult psychiatric unit for 8 years and then CMO of the hospital for 22 years during rapid and significant changes in the practice of inpatient psychiatry. I was also an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Albert Einstein School of Medicine supervising the education of Einstein medical students at Four Winds. For the last 5 years of my career I was CMO of an outpatient CMHC in Carmel, NY.
I think it important to identify, educate, and offer certification to psychiatrists who are interested in treating adolescents since there is a great need for them. There are too few child psychiatrists to fill this need and too many adult psychiatrists who won't treat patients younger than 18. Candidates for certification by the ABAP must have an adequate understanding of human development, both psychological and physical, as well as a keen understanding of family dynamics. They must also have flexibility in how they relate to young people, not talk jargon, and not jump to the conclusion that medication will solve all problems just to satisfy a parent, insurance company, or therapy provide"
In his retirement, The American Board of Adolescent Psychiatry now is the beneficiary of Dr. Bauman's experience, wisdom, and knowledge as a member of our Board of Directors.
