We do not require a 2-year ACGME-accredited fellowship, which everyone agrees is ideal and most appropriate for psychiatrists who wish to specialize exclusively in the field of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Our Board Certification, by contrast, is geared towards General Psychiatrists who are interested in, or are spending a good percentage of their clinical time, working with adolescents and young adults. In other words, our focus is not on certifying psychiatrists primarily working with children and younger adolescents, where there is an established and approved process of fellowship training and Board Certification. We offer an alternative more suited to General Psychiatrists working with older teens and young adults who are already Board Certified in General Psychiatry. In lieu of a fellowship requirement, we have created an alternative and acceptable pathway to Board Certification that builds on initial American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) and/or evidence of continuing certification by ABPN or the The National Board of Physicians and Surgeons (NBPS), or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Canada (RCPSC), or The American Osteopathic Association (AOA), in General or Child Psychiatry and then includes certain continuing education, practice, examination success, and licensing requirements.
